Defying the trend of recent bookshop closures, Embiggen Books opened in Melbourne last year and has already played host to visiting and local stars of literature, science and the arts. This extraordinary little bookshop run by Kirsty and Warren was inspired by the great libraries of the world and sells an ever-changing, curated collection of excellent new books. Their already famous events programme has included the likes of Nobel Prize winner Professor Peter Doherty; philosopher and writer A.C Grayling; astrophysicist and director of the Origins Institute Professor Lawrence Krauss;  Former Victorian Premier, The Hon. Jon Cain; Bioethicist and columnist Leslie Cannold; biologist and blogger Professor P.Z. Myers; Novelist and creator of the online game Nation States Max Barry; and award winning young adult author Michael Pryor.

Recording live at Ask An Atheist with Sam Mulvey

On Sunday, April 14 I was a guest on the ‘Ask An Atheist’ Radio show in Tacoma, WA.
Later that night I performed at the post show meet-up. It’s been a really great couple of days here, although there has been a bit of controversy and I’d like to share with you what’s happened.

For the last few weeks we were locked in to holding the post show performance at Anthem Beverage & Bistro. I had seen photos of the venue and was looking forward to playing there. Then on Monday, 6 days before the event I received email notice from ‘Ask An Atheist’ hosts Becky and Sam (Rebecca Friedman and Sam Mulvey) that the venue was reneging on their contract with the show and was cancelling my appearance there. Anthem, in their email, stated:

‘This isn’t something that we feel comfortable promoting or hosting because it doesn’t align with what we believe and stand for.’

Pretty crazy (and quite possibly illegal) that a venue would pull out just before a show. Even after it had been confirmed and had been publicised in local media.

Because of the coverage, Anthem received some negative reviews on Facebook and on their Yelp page (which were later removed). I also received kind messages of support and encouragement. I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to write about the event and to me.

The good news was that ‘Ask An Atheist’ managed to find a replacement venue that same day Thanks so much to Doyle’s Public House for accomodating us at the last minute. The show went ahead and was a big success. the venue and staff were supportive and kind to us and I look forward to playing there again the next time I am in town.

The last few days with the lovely folks from ‘Ask An Atheist’ Podcast have been pretty special and we are sad to leave. We’ve had such a blast with the team and the community here. What does being a woman mean to you?

I was just finishing an interview for an Australian online fashion magazine, ‘Beauty & Lace.’ That was the last question. Here was my answer..

What does being a woman mean to you?

In the not so distant past, being a woman in my society meant that your path was already mapped out for you. For many women today, it still does.
I celebrate the fact that I am not held to those same gender roles and am able to identify as is relevant to me.
Growing up in a religious environment I found that my gender defined expectations upon me and my behaviour. That was the first lens through which my ‘womaness’ was understood. It is only recently, having rejected this ideology, that I am able to respond, explore and discover what being a women can mean for me.
Perhaps, because of this introduction to gender from which I have rebelled, I now associate it with freedom and autonomy.
Being a woman, to me, is about a focus on being human and embracing all aspects of who I am. It is also about the freedom for it to have whatever meaning I want it to.

I’d be interested to hear people’s responses, regardless of gender.

In late 2012 I was on two local melbourne community radio shows. I thought I would share the interviews with you

88.3 with Mark Copolov

In December I appeared on Mark Copolov’s show on 88.3 Southern FM. It was something a bit different as I had my parents on the show with me. It was nice. They were old friends of Mark and I got to have my dad accompany me on the violin. It was also their 30th wedding anniversary. We spoke about my music, atheism and upcoming projects. I played Eve, My Morality & Little March, as well as some album tracks

94.1 Australian Made

In November I was a guest on 3WBC 94.1 Radio show: Australian Made.
I spoke with host DirtySexyDave about my music and atheism. We play some recorded tracks and I performed Eve and My Morality live.

The program, Australian Made, airs every Tuesday from 7-8pm. Each show provides local music recommendations, guests and a gig guide for the week.
