This song is a strong statement of my beliefs regarding mythology; I do not believe in the supernatural. Even though it is impossible to disprove all these mythological creatures, there is no evidence for their existence and therefore I do not believe. I also make the point that because I don’t believe in these otherworldly beings’ ability to help me, I take the responsibility for myself and my own actions. It can be scary to think of facing your hardships alone but it is also empowering.
Song Lyrics
I don’t believe in fairies
I don’t believe in ghosts
I don’t believe in vampires
Hungry for our throats
I don’t believe in demons
Or witches that can fly
I don’t believe in dragons
I think they’re all a lie
So when I’m in the dark
I’m not afraid, I’m not afraid
Of creations imaginations have made
I don’t believe in Jesus
I don’t believe in Zeus
I I don’t believe in Allah
I think they have no use
I don’t believe in adam
I don’t believe in eve
I don’t believe in talking snakes
I think it’s make believe
So when I’m in the dark
In a dark place, In a dark place
I know it’s only me and what I face
I don’t believe in heaven
I don’t believe in hell
I don’t believe that we are children
Who need to fear to behave well
I don’t believe in salvation
I don’t believe in sin
I don’t believe it will be easy
But I believe that reason can win
So when I’m in the dark
I’m not afraid, I’m not afraid
Of creations imaginations have made
When I’m in the dark
In a dark place, In a dark place
I know it’s only me and what I face
You have a wonderful voice! I appreciate your rejecting the silly myths that people try to push on us. I grew up in a religious household. It has taken years for me to shed the burdens of their myths. I love the freedom of free thinking!
I love this song! I will see if I can download it on ITUNES. I love your voice! I first heard it on Dan Barker’s atheist podcast.
I love the harmonies in this song! I am not sure if this is the best place to ask, but I would appreciate it very much if you could tell me which chords you use in the chorus.
My favorite, love it
Shelley – Thanks for singing this wonderful song. I loved the music, your voice, and the lyrics.
Did you write both the music and the lyrics?
Thanks,
Joel
Hey Joel,
Thanks heaps!
I did write the music and the lyrics.
I really like this song too, it makes me feel empowered 🙂
Take care
Whenever I hear somebody reciting Psalm 23, especially the “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me” part, guess what song lyrics are going through my head?
If you don’t believe in imaginary threats, you also don’t need to believe in imaginary protectors.
AWesome!!
I’m really looking forward to meeting you again at our Boston Skeptics in the Pub next week. Trying to do some last minute publicity, so I was listening to as much of your material as I can find in a few minutes of minimal effort 🙂
I really like this song and I think it would make a great Halloween song, especially if accompanied by a circus-style calliope. It has the right sort of Oomp-bomp-bomp Oomp-bomp-bomp beat that I think would work great!
See you soon!
P.S. the web post should be up in a few minutes at http://bostonskeptics.com/2013/04/sitp-shelley-segal/
Thanks John!
It was lovely seeing you again and getting to play for the Boston Skeptics.
See you next time
This is one of my favs.
I sing along w/ it on my ipod now that I’ve added the songs from the CD I purchased at your CFI/Grand Rapids concert to my iTunes library.
Thanks so much for this lyrics accessibility!
What a great song! I wish there were more artists like you singing songs like this. Thank you for sharing!
Hi John,
Thanks so much for saying so 🙂
