This song is written to a close friend of mine who has a world-view I can imagine is shared by many. My friend chooses to believe in a specific god that is involved in our lives. He picks and chooses the laws that he follows. He doesn’t wholly believe in the religious tradition he was brought up in, but does not want to leave entirely. So he creates his own mix match version of it all. While he understands the arguments against his position he chooses not to consider them further as he is content with his convictions despite them being contradictory. He finds comfort from his chosen beliefs. His world view doesn’t stand up to reasoned argument so he avoids it completely.
Song Lyrics
You’re standing in house with no walls
You don’t wanna leave coz it feels like home
You’re sitting in a house with no floor
You can feel the mud seeping in
But you just choose to ignore
All the evidence that what you think isn’t real
You don’t look because you don’t like the way it makes you feel
You say you need the shelter to get through all your falls
That’s why you choose to live in a house with no walls
You’re wearing the emperors new clothes
You think they’ll protect you from the world but how can you be sure
You’re wearing anything at all?
Even when the others tell you that your raincoat is worth more than
All the evidence that what you think isn’t real
You don’t look because you don’t like the way it makes you feel
You say you need the shelter to get through all your falls
That’s why you choose to live in a house with no walls
Why don’t you build your shelter from the things we know
All the out dated dogma why don’t you let it go
You’re standing in house with no walls
You don’t wanna leave coz it feels like home
You’re sitting in a house with no floor
You can feel the mud seeping in
But you just choose to ignore
All the evidence that what you think isn’t real
You don’t look because you don’t like the way it makes you feel
You say you need the shelter to get through all your falls
That’s why you choose to live in a house with no walls
I love this metaphor.
Nicely done.
Marvelous. I had to look up the lyrics and follow along because of my bad hearing…and I noticed…
“All the out dated dogma why don’t you let it go”
On the Atheist Album, that line ends with “dogma, just let it go”
Of course, that doesn’t mean you always sing it this way 🙂
I hadn’t even noticed haha! You are right.
I think I do sing the ‘Why Don’t you..” line live sometimes.
Thanks for taking the time to read the lyrics! <3
